Making a Living from Comics: Myth or Reality?
Intro
Many people dream of making a living from comics.
Creating characters, telling stories, seeing their books in readers’ hands… on paper, it almost seems like the ideal life for an artist.
And yet, as soon as you look at the numbers or hear from authors themselves, the reality becomes much more complicated.
Indeed, between the heavy workload, often low income, the challenges of gaining recognition, and an extremely competitive market, making a living from comics remains a difficult goal to achieve for most artists.
So in the end, is making a living from comics a myth… or a real possibility?
The answer is more nuanced than one might think.
Why do so many comic book creators struggle?
Creating a comic book requires a tremendous amount of work.
You have to write, create storyboards, draw, ink, color, proofread, lay out the pages… and sometimes repeat certain steps several times. As a result, even a single volume can take months, or even years, to produce.
And yet, all that time invested offers absolutely no guarantee of a comfortable income.
In traditional publishing, many authors work with relatively small advances, limited royalties on sales, and very little control over the marketing of their project. Then, once the book is released, everything depends on its visibility, how it’s promoted, word of mouth, or sometimes simply timing.
Furthermore, comics remain a unique market. Many projects are considered risky. Publishing houses therefore prefer to invest in established franchises or trends that have already proven successful.
Added to this is fierce competition.
Today, an independent author isn’t just up against other independents. They also have to compete for the public’s attention with giants like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and the Marvel and DC universes.
Under these conditions, even an excellent comic book can fly completely under the radar.
Why talent alone isn't enough in comics
This is probably one of the hardest realities to accept in this industry.
Being an excellent artist doesn’t automatically guarantee success.
In reality, there are countless talented artists who remain unknown for years. Not because their work is bad, but rather because they lack visibility, a network, a strategy, or simply the resources.
Creating a good comic book is already a mountain of work. However, today, that’s only part of the equation.
You also have to succeed in grabbing attention in a world where everyone is fighting for a few seconds of visibility.
And inevitably, when a project lacks exposure, it becomes much harder to generate consistent sales.
Yet some people manage to make a living from comics
Despite all these challenges, it is still possible to make a living from comics.
However, the creators who succeed today have often grasped one important thing: they do not rely on a single source of income.
Some build their community on social media. Others use crowdfunding, conventions, direct sales, subscriptions, merchandise, or digital content.
Moreover, the internet has fundamentally changed the game.
In the past, an author depended almost entirely on a publisher or a bookstore to make a living. Now, it’s possible to build your own audience, sell directly to your readers, create a loyal community, and gradually expand your creative universe.
Of course, it’s still difficult. Nevertheless, there are far more opportunities today than there were before.
Making a living from comics requires skills that go far beyond just drawing
This is an aspect that rarely comes up when people think about the job of a comic book creator.
Many people think that a creator simply spends their days drawing. However, the reality is much broader.
Today, making a living from comics also requires knowing how to sell your project, present your world, manage your communications, maintain your social media presence, organize events, and even fulfill orders.
On top of that, there’s sometimes logistics, marketing, printing, customer service, managing a website, or even creating videos.
Sometimes, you have to spend hours replying to messages, preparing for a convention, or fixing technical issues before you even have time to draw.
This isn’t necessarily the part artists dream of at the start. Yet it’s often these skills that make the difference between a comic that remains unknown… and one that really starts to gain traction.
The choice I made with Muntu Warriors comics
With Muntu Warriors, I quickly realized that creating a good story alone wouldn’t be enough.
I also had to build something around it.
Developing the books, attending conventions, improving the website, working on SEO, building a community, testing merchandise, creating content, and expanding the universe step by step.
Obviously, all of this takes a tremendous amount of time and energy. However, it’s also what allows the project to move forward more solidly in the long run.
Today, I’m mainly focused on building a universe capable of sustainable growth.
So, if this resonates with you, you can join the adventure, read the available volumes, and spread the word about the project to those around you.
After all, that’s how the universe continues to grow.
Conclusion
So, making a living from comics: myth or reality?
The reality is that this profession is much harder than many people imagine. Talent alone isn’t always enough, and the journey often requires much more than just drawing.
However, it’s not impossible either.
With time, a solid strategy, a community, and a great deal of perseverance, some people manage to turn their comics and their creative world into a real business.
Of course, this doesn’t happen overnight.
But with patience, consistency, and a clear vision, it can become a reality.
