African Culture: What Cinema and Manga Have Misunderstood
Intro
African culture inspires cinema, manga, comics, video games, and many other forms of fiction.
In fact, this influence continues to grow every year. More and more creators are taking an interest in the continent’s history, traditions, mythologies, and historical figures.
However, certain representations recur very frequently.
As a result, several themes occupy a prominent place in works inspired by Africa. These subjects are important; they tell a part of the continent’s history. However, they represent only a fraction of all that African culture has to offer fiction.
Themes of African culture that keep coming up
When a work of art depicts African culture, certain themes appear regularly.
For example, stories often address discrimination, poverty, racism, conflict, and war.
Of course, these themes are part of the continent’s history and deserve to be told. Many films and stories have helped us better understand certain realities through them.
However, African culture has much more to offer.
After all, it is rich in kingdoms, conquerors, navigators, merchants, scientists, military leaders, philosophers, and legendary figures.
Furthermore, African mythologies are among the richest in the world. They are teeming with fantastical creatures, deities, heroes, and tales capable of fueling hundreds of different stories.
Thus, African culture provides a vast playground for adventure, fantasy, science fiction, thrillers, and even superhero stories.
Blackwashing: A Problem That Isn't Really a Problem
Furthermore, discussions about blackwashing have taken center stage in the media and on social media.
On the one hand, seeing more Black characters in fiction allows many viewers and readers to better identify with the works they enjoy.
Moreover, this approach has sometimes allowed new generations to discover certain franchises from a different perspective.
On the other hand, some viewers would rather see more original characters.
After all, African culture already possesses an incredible wealth of stories, historical figures, mythologies, and sources of inspiration capable of giving rise to new heroes.
The history of African culture cannot be reduced to a single era
When some people think of African culture, they immediately picture traditional villages, huts, or ancient tales.
Yet the continent’s history spans thousands of years and encompasses a multitude of fascinating periods.
Thus, Africa has seen the rise of great kingdoms, prosperous cities, impressive trade networks, and historical figures who left their mark on their era far beyond the continent.
Moreover, African cultures continue to evolve today through major cities, new technologies, creative industries, music, film, and entrepreneurship.
Consequently, telling the story of African culture allows us to explore the past, the present, and even the future.
And it is precisely this temporal richness that offers authors exceptional creative freedom.
Alternatives for African culture in fiction
Fortunately, many African creators are already telling their own stories.
For example, Nollywood has become one of the world’s largest film industries. Thanks to it, thousands of films are produced each year to tell stories intended primarily for an African audience.
In addition, many authors, illustrators, animators, and studios are now developing their own worlds inspired by their local cultures.
As a result, new works are regularly appearing in comics, manga, animation, film, and video games.
This momentum is gradually broadening perspectives and showcasing the diversity of African cultures through the eyes of those who experience them every day.
